Same Sex Marriage Should Be
Forbidden
Prohibition of same-sex marriage can cause psychological
disorders. While marriage provides both physical and psychological health
benefits and banning same-sex marriage increases rates of psychological
disorders. As evidence, Researchers from University of California at Los
Angeles (UCLA), San Francisco State University and The University of
Massachusetts (2012) found that same-sex marriage couples were significantly
less distressed than lesbian, gay and bisexual persons not in a legally recognized
relationship. In addition, American Journal of Public Health (2010) also found
that after their states had banned same-sex marriage, gay, lesbian and bisexual
people suffered a 37% increase in mood disorders, a 42% increase in alcohol-use
disorders and a 248% increase in generalized anxiety disorders. In any case,
marriage is not only for procreation, infertile couples or couples not wishing
to have a children will be a psychological disorders when prevented from
marrying. For example, in a 2010 Pew Research Center survey, both married and
unmarried people rated love, commitment and companionship higher than having
children as “very important” reasons to get married. Moreover, from 1970
through 2012 roughly 30% of all US households were married couples without
children and in 2012, married couples without children outnumbered married
couples with children by 9%.
In other case, same-sex marriage is more stable and brings
benefits in the country's economy. In fact, legalizing same-sex marriage will
not harm the institution of marriage and same-sex marriages may even be more
stable than heterosexual marriage. According to Social Science Quarterly on
April 13, 2009 found that Laws permitting same-sex marriage or civil unions
have no adverse effect on marriage, divorce and abortion rates, it means
same-sex marriage more stable than heterosexual marriage. Furthermore, study by
UCLA’s Williams Institute reported that the rated at which legally recognize
same-sex couples and their relationship is 1.1% on average, while 2% of married
different-sex couples divorce annually. In the same way, same-sex marriage can
bring financial gain to federal, state and local goverment and can help boost
the economy. For instance, in July 2012 New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg
announced that same-sex marriage had contributed $259 million to the city’s
economy since the practice became legal there in July 2011. Furthermore, Williams
Institute (2014) also reports that legalizing same-sex marriage would boost the
economies of the 11 US states studied by a total of $723 million over three
years.
Obviously many people believe that same-sex marriage can
make a child grows with mental disorders because grows with the same figure,
but in fact same-sex couples can be a good parents. Moreover, so many children
raised by same-sex couples be a competence child with low social problems. As evidence,
University of Melbourne (2014) showed that children raised by same-sex parents
about 6% higher than the general population on measure of general health and
family cohesion. Next, Pediatrics on June 7, 2010 found that children of
lesbian mothers were rated higher than children of heterosexual parents in
social and academic competence and had fewer social problems. Besides, gay
marriage legalization is correlated with lower divorce rates, while banning
same-sex marriage cause humiliation and uncertainty for children. For instance,
Massachusetts which became the first US states to legalize gay marriage in
2004, had the lowest divorce rates in the country in 2008. Its divorce rate
declined 21% between 2003 and 2008. Further, in ruling Texas gay marriage ban
unconstitutional. San Antonio-based federal judge Orlando Garcia stated that
the ban case needless stigmatization and humiliation for children being raised
by the loving same-sex couples being targeted.
